In continuing Two Twelve’s work for Yale University, we used our previous effort in assessing the wayfinding and signage needs for the entire campus as a jumping off point to delve into our new scope for the Yale Sterling Memorial Library. Initially working with architectural firm Copper, Robertson, & Partners during our assessment, we were also retained to implement our designs, and then called back again to work with David Helpern Architects for the historic renovation of the library’s interior redesign.

Initially completed in 1930, the library resembles a gothic cathedral, and is one of the largest of Yale’s libraries. The entry structure of the building, the Nave, was under a renovation to restore the building to its original, historic splendor while also undergoing updates to meet the modern needs of students, professors and users of the space. The signage we developed for the library maximizes its functionality as a modern, academic space, while celebrating its renowned architecture. Our designs are cohesive and contemporary, yet maintain historic elements by making use of an elegant, Yale-specific typeface.  The architecturally appropriate sign detailing and materials achieve a stately and academic aesthetic, responding to the library’s exquisite features while improving overall navigation for the library’s user.
